How to Remove the Stock Muffler on a V6 Mustang

There are two things that will grab any car enthusiast's attention when a V6 Mustang drives by. First is the Mustang's looks, and second is the sound of the Mustang's V6 engine. That is why the Mustang's muffler is one of the first aspects of the car to be customized. Not only is the muffler cheaper to customize, it is also easier compared to a Mustang body kit customization. There are many aftermarket mufflers that can enhance the Mustang's V6 engine sound and also improve the V6 engine's performance.

Things You'll Need

  • Latex gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Wooden blocks (2)
  • Hydraulic jack
  • Jack stands (2)
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension (3 inches)
  • 15 mm socket
  • Penetrating oil spray
  • Pry bar
  • Park the car on a flat, paved surface and engage the parking brake. Place wooden blocks behind the car's front tires to prevent it from accidentally moving. Wear latex gloves and safety goggles while working on the car.

  • Position a hydraulic jack under the car's frame in front of the rear wheel nearest to the car's muffler. Lift the car with the hydraulic jack and position it on jack stands.

  • Loosen the clamp just behind the Y pipe assembly under the car. Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and a 15 mm socket to loosen the clamp's bolt. Spray the bolt with penetrating oil spray if it is difficult to unscrew.

  • Loosen the clamp in front of the muffler assembly with the ratchet and socket. Spray it with the penetrating oil spray if it is also difficult to unscrew.

  • Remove the front pipe of the exhaust system from the Y pipe assembly. Wiggle the front pipe from side to side, while pulling the pipe outward, to remove the front pipe from the Y pipe.

  • Repeat Step 5 to remove the other pipe that runs above the axle to the muffler.

  • Remove the muffler's hangers from the rubber isolators with a pry bar then remove the muffler.
