The Key Won't Turn in My Mercedes Ignition

Each customer who buys a vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, a German manufacturer of automobiles, trucks and buses, receives a key to be used to unlock the doors and to start the engine. Occasionally, the key fails to turn the ignition because of a dirty key cylinder or a locked steering wheel. Use a lubricant to allow the ignition to turn easier.

Things You'll Need

  • WD-40 lubricant
  • Remove the key from the ignition.

  • Spray a small amount of WD-40 onto the key blade.

  • Insert the key into the ignition and jiggle. The WD-40 provides lubrication, making it easier to turn the key.

  • Visit your local Mercedes dealership to have a replacement key made. Keys may become worn over time, making it difficult to turn the ignition.
