How to Program 2002 Toyota 4Runner Key

The 2002 Toyota 4Runner keeps a 3.4-liter V-6 engine under the hood, and a keyless entry system on the doors. This locking system allows the driver to open the car without needing to insert the ignition key into the door locks. If you want to add a locking remote to the 4Runner, you must program it before it will work. By performing some repetitive steps, you can communicate with your 4Runner and initiate a keyless remote programming mode.

  • Open the driver's side door and leave it open and unlocked, but make sure all the other doors are closed.

  • Put the key into the ignition and remove it. Be sure not to turn the key.

  • Press the "Lock" button on the driver's side door panel, then press the "Unlock" button. Repeat this step another four times for a total of five locking cycles, then close and re-open the driver's side door. This all must be done within a 40-second period.

  • Repeat another five locking cycles where you press the "Lock" then "Unlock" button on the driver side door panel, then insert the key into the ignition.

  • Turn the ignition to the "On" position (this is as far as you can turn the key before cranking the Toyota engine) then turn it back to the "Off" position. Remove the key from the ignition. All of this must be done within a 40-second timeframe, and the door locks will cycle automatically after a few seconds if the step has been followed correctly.

  • Press both the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the 4Runner remote for one second before releasing it. Press just the "Lock" button and hold it for two seconds or until you hear the door locks cycle again. Once programmed, you can close the door and use the programmed remote.
