Checklist for Scheduled Car Maintenance for a Range Rover

The Range Rover sports utility vehicle was first produced in 1970 by the Land Rover Company but did not make its U.S. debut until 1987. The tough four-wheel drive automobile is suitable for off-road driving across difficult terrain. To keep your Range Rover safe and reliable, scheduled maintenance procedures need to be performed.

Brakes and Tires

  • Your brakes are essential for the safety of you, your passengers and other road users. Inspect brake pads, disks for wear and, parking brake operation every 15,000 miles. Brake calipers should be checked for leaks at the same intervals. Inspect brake lines for damage every 34,000 miles. Top off brake fluid every 15,000 miles and, drain and replace it every three years or 45,000 miles--which ever occurs sooner. Tires require the tread and pressure checked every 12 months or 15,000 miles.

Suspension and Steering

  • Off-road vehicles have tougher suspension and steering systems than normal road cars, but they still need to be checked on a regular basis. Every 30,000 miles, check their components for damage and wear. Examine the drive shafts and rubber boots for leaks at the same time. The wheel centers require lubricating at 15,000-mile intervals.

Engine

  • Spark plugs, drive belts--including the supercharger belt, if fitted--and the fuel filter must be replaced every 105,000 miles. Battery terminals should be cleaned and the battery topped off, if required, at 15,000-mile intervals. Inspect engine coolant and freeze protection every 15,000 miles and, replace the engine coolant completely every 10 years. The engine oil and oil filter must be replaced every 6,000 miles to prevent excessive engine wear.

Transmission

  • The Range Rover gearbox is more complex than a standard gear box with both high- and low-ratio gears for use in off-road situations. Failing to maintain it properly can reduce its working life. The oil in the transfer gearbox and rear differential must be changed every 75,000 miles. Replace front and rear axle oil every ten years and, if fitted, replace the oil in automatic gearboxes and the oil filter every 150,000 miles or at 10-year intervals.
