How to Troubleshoot an In-dash CD Player

Over time the built in CD player of any vehicle may run into some issues, ranging from how the CD plays to turning on at all. Whatever the problem you're having with the CD player, there are usually a few methods of correcting the issue, regardless of the malfunction. You can perform all of these troubleshooting steps without the aid of a vehicle mechanic or an audio engineer.

Things You'll Need

  • Damp cloth
  • Compressed air
  • Replacement fuse
  • Turn the car on and let it heat up before playing the CD. When the CD player is cold, the disc is more likely to skip. Turn the ignition off once the car is warmed up.

  • Clean off the bottom of the CD with a damp cloth. This removes any dust, dirt or fingerprints left on the disc.

  • Do not use mini-CDs in your player. These discs are not supported by in-dash CD players and may become stuck in the device.

  • Look up the fuse information in the owner's manual. If other items on the car are not working, such as the power windows, dome light or cigarette power port, this is due to a blown fuse. Remove the fuse associated with the CD player and replace it with a new fuse (found at any local automotive shop or large retail store).

  • Spray a few shots of compressed air into the inside of the CD player, This removes any particles of dust attached to the reading lens of the CD player.
