How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 1992 Cadillac

General Motors recommends replacing the fuel filter on all 1992 Cadillac vehicles every 15,000 miles. The fuel filter cleans the gasoline, removing any foreign material before the gas reaches the fuel rail. Like the oil and air filters, however, there's only so much the fuel filter can hold before it either plugs or allows the contaminants to pass. With that in mind, make sure you don't neglect your fuel system by replacing the fuel filter regularly.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 ramps
  • 2 wheel chocks
  • Drop pan
  • Box-wrench set
  • New fuel filter
  • Drive the front wheels of the Cadillac onto the ramps. Set the parking brake and then place the two wheel chocks behind the two rear wheels.

  • Put the drop pan under the Cadillac and climb underneath the car with the box-wrench set and new fuel filter.

  • Follow the fuel lines forward from the fuel tank until you locate the fuel filter. Look at your new filter to familiarize yourself with the filter's appearance in order to easily spot the old one.

  • Place one box wrench on the fuel-filter nut where the fuel line connects to the fuel-filter inlet. Put another wrench on the fuel-line nut, right beside the fuel-filter nut. Loosen the fuel-line nut with the one wrench while holding the fuel-filter nut steady with the other.

  • Repeat step four where the forward fuel line connects to the fuel-filter outlet. Pull both fuel lines away from the filter by hand and then pull the old filter out of the retaining strap that holds it to the chassis. Put the old filter in the drop pan.

  • Slide the new fuel filter into the retaining strap in place of the old filter. The filter flow arrow must be pointing towards the engine.

  • Position the rear fuel line on the fuel-filter inlet and tighten the fuel-line nut down in reverse of how you removed it. Repeat this on the forward fuel line.

  • Climb out from under the Cadillac with the drop pan and tools. Turn the key to the run position, wait until you hear the fuel pump cycle one time and then start the engine. The pump should take 10 to 15 seconds to cycle.

  • Move the wheel chocks out from behind the rear wheels and drive the Cadillac off the ramps.
