How to Get Ice Off a Car Window

Along with winter comes winter storms and frozen car windows. Running the defroster will eventually melt the ice away, but will likely take more time than you have available. Scraping the ice away is another option for removing the ice, but one that is labor intensive and requires you to expose yourself to the elements. An easier way to remove ice from car windows is using a combination of an inexpensive, homemade de-icing solution and a scraper.

Things You'll Need

  • 70 percent isopropyl alcohol
  • Quart-size spray bottle
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Scraper
  • Pour a bottle of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol into a quart-size spray bottle. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the alcohol.

  • Shake the bottle well and saturate the windshield with the mixture. Allow the solution to sit for five minutes.

  • Scrape away the remaining ice. The remaining ice should have been loosened by the solution.
