How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is a popular family sedan that also offers vehicle owners the opportunity to perform basic maintenance at home. Checking the power steering fluid level is one of many fluid checks that are easy to do on a Hyundai Sonata and can help prolong the life of your vehicle. Consult your owner's manual for the specific factory fluid, or use a Hyundai-approved power steering fluid.

Things You'll Need

  • Hyundai-approved power steering fluid
  • Check the power steering fluid in your Hyundai Sonata every 30,000 miles, when you also check the transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant as well as inspect the rest of the steering system.

  • Park your Hyundai Sonata on a level surface before checking fluids and wait for the engine to cool. Warm fluid or an inclined surface can cause an inaccurate fluid level reading.

  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir in the engine department. The reservoir should be clearly labeled. Read the fluid level using the level markings on the side of the reservoir, making sure that the fluid is above the low level mark.

  • Add fluid if necessary, adding fluid slowly to avoid filling past the maximum fluid level. If you overfill the reservoir, drain excess fluid by detaching the hose connected to the power steering fluid reservoir and allowing it to drain out of the bottom.

  • Inspect surround hoses, clamps and other power steering components for leaks or places where the components look worn, broken or cracked. Replace any worn parts or have your Hyundai Sonata serviced if you suspect a leak.
