How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Geo Metro

The Geo Metro was first introduced in North America in 1989, although the same car was introduced several years earlier under a series of other names worldwide. The Geo Metro was initially only 3-cylinders, which meant no power steering, but some 4-cylinder models after 1995 do have power steering. If you're not sure if your Geo Metro has power steering, simply look under the hood.

Things You'll Need

  • Power steering fluid for use in Geo Metro vehicles
  • Check the power steering fluid in your Geo Metro when you check all of the fluids, about every 7,500 miles, especially if you're driving an older model that has had some repairs or parts replacements.

  • Park your Geo Metro on a level surface when checking the power steering and other fluids, since an inclined vehicle can result in incorrect fluid level readings. Also make sure that the engine is cool, since warm fluid will also read differently.

  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir, which should be located near the power steering pump component attached to the engine. If you don't have a power steering system, there will be no power steering pump or fluid reservoir, and you don't need to perform fluid maintenance to the steering system.

  • Check the fluid levels using the markings on the reservoir, making sure that the fluid level is above the low level mark. Add fluid if necessary, but add fluid slowly as the reservoir is small to avoid filling above the maximum level mark.

  • Inspect the reservoir, hoses, clamps and pump for wear and tear, including loose parts and breaks or cracks in the surfaces to catch leaks in the power steering system early.
