An oil change is a standard procedure for all vehicles. The method for a 2006 Honda Accord is exactly the same as it is for other makes and models. The process takes about an hour, if you include preparation, and it involves draining the engine oil completely and replacing it. You should change the oil about every 3,000 miles, and you should replace the oil filter as well, as old, degraded oil will have collected inside the filter.
Place a small service ramp in front of each of the Accord's four wheels and drive the vehicle up the ramps. Set the emergency brake and exit the Accord. Secure the back side of each tire with wheel chocks.
Lay flat on a creeper and wheel yourself beneath the vehicle. Position the drain pan under the drain plug. Remove the plug with a socket wrench. Allow the oil to flow completely out of the tank and into the drain pan. This is the longest part of the process, and it should take about 45 minutes.
Wipe the drain plug's opening dry with with a clean shop rag. Wipe out the screw threads inside the drain opening. Reinsert the drain plug, but do not overtighten with the socket wrench.
Move the drain pan under the Accord's oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter, but do not remove it all the way. As soon as the filter is loose enough, oil will pour out from the oil filter mounting base.
Remove the filter once the oil stops flowing. Pour oil out of the filter and into the pan. Wipe the remaining oil off the filter mounting base.
Rub fresh oil on the edges of the new filter. Work it into the filter's screw threads as well. This will help seal the filter once you attach it to the mounting base. Screw the new filter onto the base by hand. Do not use the filter wrench for this, as doing so will damage the mounting base.
Slide out from under the Accord with the drain pan and the old filter. Set both aside for recycling later. Remove the chocks from the wheels and drive the Accord off the portable service ramps.
Open the Accord's hood, remove the oil dipstick, and wipe it off with a clean rag.
Pour five quarts of fresh motor oil into the tank. Reinsert and remove the dipstick. Check the oil level. Top off the tank as needed, but do not overfill it.
Replace the dipstick and close the Accord's hood.
