Duramax Oil Specifications

Duramax is a diesel engine originally designed for General Motors and Chevrolet light and middle-weight trucks. The first engine that appeared in 2001 was a V-6. It developed a fuel-injector problem that caused overheating and blown head gaskets. This was caused by fuel leaking into the engine oil. This problem was corrected, and fuel injectors are now completely covered by warranty. A V-8 turbo engine was introduced in 2004 and it is now common in heavy-duty trucks. Duramax has become one of the most popular diesel engines, but owners must use the appropriate engine oil to maintain top functioning. Chevrolet recommends CJ-4 oil, and there are several different brands to choose from.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic Oil

  • This oil has been tested in trucks by driving them more than 40,000 highway miles, and it delivered an outstanding performance. The new, lower-emission Duramax diesel engines can run at very high temperatures, which dumps extra acids and soot into the oil. Shell Rotella T is a heavy-duty oil that meets or exceeds CJ-4 requirements. Shell Rotella T5 is available in SAE 10W-30 C3-4 and SAE 10W-40 C3-4. It provides fuel economy, enhanced engine cleanliness, extended-drain capability and top wear protection. The Rotella T Triple exceeds CJ-4 requirements, and is designed to help control wear, emissions and deposits within the engine. Using this oil can provide engine protection and achieve 38-percent lower iron wear.

AMSOIL Synthetic Oil

  • This synthetic oil is highly rated and produced by the first company to develop a synthetic lubricant rated by the Automotive Petroleum Institute (API) for cars and trucks. Current practice is to change oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Both the 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil and Series 3000 5W-30 encourage 25,000 miles between oil changes. The manufacturer stresses the fuel savings with AMSOIL and the positive effects on the environment because there is a decreased need to dispose of used oil from oil changes. AMSOIL reduces sludge and formation of deposits, provides protection against temperature extremes, prevents rust and corrosion, and improves fuel efficiency. This oil meets or exceeds all API-rated and GM specifications.

The manufacturer of AMSOIL states oil changes are only needed every 25,000 miles.

Royal Purple Diesel Engine Oil

  • This is a newer, less expensive synthetic oil that improves engine performance, reduces deposits and increases fuel economy. It adheres to the surfaces of the engine when the engine is turned off, and provides protection during starting. The manufacturer claims that this oil increases horsepower and torque while reducing wear and heat within the engine. This oil is API certified and contains Royal Purple’s synthetic additive called Synertech. This reduces wear on the rings, cylinders and bearings. Using Royal Purple oil will not void the Duramax engine warranty.
