Ford Oil Types

Different auto manufacturers have different oil specifications for their products. Ford Motor Company lists specifications for the oil that works best in Ford-produced motor vehicles. Ford recommends vehicle owners use the type of oil recommended for their vehicle to get optimal performance.

SAE 5W-30 Oil

  • SAE 5W-30 oil is the one specified in many Ford vehicles, past and present. Some of the Ford vehicles that use this type of oil include the Capri GL, Escort and Mustang. This type of oil is specified for Ford diesel engines and gasoline engines. In defining 5W-30, the five references the viscosity of the oil. The W stands for winter, while the 30 denotes the weight of the oil. The viscosity of oil is determined by the time it takes for the oil to pour through a specified orifice.

SAE 10W-30

  • SAE 10W-30 motor oil is recommended for use in all Ford vehicles equipped with normally aspirated, turbocharged and supercharged gas-powered engines.

SAE 0W-30

  • SAE 0W-30 oil is recommended for use in Ford diesel engines. This oil is suitable for use in new turbocharged diesel engines and older diesel engines. The low viscosity of this oil allows it to operate smoothly in extremely cold conditions. Don't use this type of oil in gas-powered engines with catalysts

SAE 15W-40

  • SAE 15W-40 oil is recommended for use in light and heavy Ford vehicles with diesel-powered engines, such as trucks, buses and construction equipment with Ford Power Stroke engines. This type of oil can be used in older and newer engines. As with the SAE 0W-30, this oil is not to be used in gas-powered engines equipped with catalysts.
