Where Is the Oil Filter at on a Saturn L300?

Your Saturn L300 uses an oil filter element rather than a typical canlike filter that most other cars use. You won't find the filter element toward the center of the bottom of the engine, either.

Locating the Filter Cap

  • You'll need to look for the filter-housing cap to find the filter element, which is held within a cartridge. The filter-housing cap would appear rounded with a six-sided top. You'll find it on the side of your L300's engine block. To help confirm that you've found it, look for the car's engine unit number and its build code date stamped on the side of the casing.

Removing the Cartridge

  • You can use a wrench to loosen the cap. Take out the cartridge, where you'll find the filter element. Separate the element from the housing cap.

Replacing the Filter Element

  • After removing the filter element, use a rag to remove oil and dirt from the filter-housing cap. Replace the O-ring seal in the cap's screw thread, then install the new filter element on the cap. Reinstall the cartridge in the casing and tighten the cap.
