Instructions for How to Change the Oil on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Performing an oil change on most vehicles is a relatively simple process that anyone with basic automotive knowledge is able to perform with the proper tools and instructions. This process can be applied to performing an oil change on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle. Check local laws for regulations for used oil disposal. Most local automotive supply and repair stores will accept used oil at little or no cost to you.

Things You'll Need

  • Five quarts of oil of the viscosity recommended for your climate (see owner's manual).
  • Oil drain pan
  • 14 mm box wrench
  • 17 mm box wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Kitty litter
  • Paper towels
  • New crush washer
  • Run the motor for five minutes or longer. Park the vehicle in an area where there is no traffic. Chock the wheels to ensure that the vehicle will not roll or move during the oil change.

  • Open the hood. Remove the oil filler cap from the top of the motor and set it aside. Place the drain pan under the automobile beneath the oil drain pan that's located directly underneath the motor.

  • Remove the drain plug using a 14 mm or 17 mm wrench. Twist the drain plug counterclockwise with the appropriate wrench to remove it. When plug is removed, used oil will drain into the pan.

  • Replace the old crush washer with the new one, and when the oil turns to a slow drip replace the drain plug and tighten it by twisting clockwise.

  • Return to the top of the motor and open the new quarts of oil. Pour the oil into the oil filler hole. Pour in 4 quarts of new oil and allow it to settle for a few minutes before pulling the oil dip stick and checking the level. Wipe the dip stick on a paper towel, then replace the stick before pulling it out again to recheck the oil level. If the oil level is not at the top notch on the dip stick then add more oil until the level is at the top notch of the dip stick. Once the oil level reaches the top notch, replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on clockwise.

  • Dispose of used oil in the oil drain pan by taking it to your local oil disposal location. Use the kitty litter to absorb any spilled oil.
