How to Remove an F150 4.9L Oil Pan

The oil pan on a 4.9 liter F-150 Ford will take a matter of minutes to pull down. The pan is responsible for catching all the engine oil when the engine is turned off. The oil is picked up by an oil pump when the motor is started and distributes the oil through the motor to keep the motor lubricated to prevent heat buildup and friction. Removing the oil pan is inevitable when you have to replace the gasket, or perform maintenance to the bottom part of the motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Putty knife
  • Razor blade
  • Locate the oil pan underneath the truck. The oil pan is located underneath the motor.

  • Slide a drain pan large enough to catch 6 quarts of oil underneath the motor. Unscrew the drain plug with a crescent wrench. Allow all the oil to drain in to the pan. Tighten the drain plug back to the oil pan when the oil is done draining.

  • Unscrew the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Place it with the waste oil.

  • Unbolt the bolts holding the drain pan with a socket wrench. There will be 16 to 20 bolts. Place them to the side.

  • Pull the drain pan down with your hands, Tap the pan with a rubber mallet if the pan is stuck to the bottom of the motor.

  • Scrape the bottom of the engine with a putty knife or a razor blade to clean off any excess gasket material. Scrape the surface of the oil pan also.
