How to Change the Oil in a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee features the 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine or the 4.7-liter eight-cylinder engine. Regardless of the engine size, the replacement oil filter is the same part number. The manufacturer of the WJ series Jeep Grand Cherokee recommends changing the engine oil every 3,000 miles of operation. To optimize the engine performance and lubrication, following the regimen is an important maintenance procedure to ensure your Grand Cherokee stays in shape.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 car ramps
  • Safety glasses
  • Latex gloves
  • Oil drain pan
  • Metric wrench set
  • Shop rags
  • Oil filter wrench (large or adjustable)
  • Replacement oil filter
  • Funnel
  • 6 quarts of 10W30 engine oil (4.0-liter or 4.7-liter HO)
  • 6 quarts of 5W30 engine oil (4.7-Liter)
  • Warm the engine up for 10 to 15 minutes to expand and thin the engine oil.

  • Drive the Grand Cherokee up onto car ramps carefully. Apply the parking brake and release the hood latch.

  • Open the hood. Remove the oil fill cap located on the valve cover.

  • Put on your safety glasses and latex gloves. Crawl under the Cherokee with everything except the replacement engine oil.

  • Place the oil drain pan beneath the oil plug on the oil pan.

  • Use a wrench to remove the oil drain plug from the oil pan in a counterclockwise direction (16 mm for 4.0-liter and 13 mm for 4.7-liter).

  • Allow the oil to drain for 30 minutes or until it stops trickling and becomes a random drip.

  • Replace the oil drain plug tightly with the appropriate wrench.

  • Relocate the oil drain pan. Remove the oil filter using an oil filter wrench. The filter is located on the passenger side of the engine block.

  • Allow the oil to drain from the filter and the oil filter housing. Use a shop rag to wipe off any spillage on the pan and the filter area.

  • Lubricate the oil filter gasket of the replacement filter with spent oil. Hand tighten the filter onto the threads of the oil filter flange. Do not tighten the filter with a wrench and be sure the gasket from the old filter did not remain behind on the flange.

  • Crawl out from under the Cherokee and place a funnel into the oil fill hole.

  • Add 6 quarts of appropriate engine oil depending on the engine. Start the engine for at least 30 seconds.

  • Back the Cherokee off the car ramps so the vehicle is level. Check the oil level on the dipstick (located on the passenger side of the engine block) to ensure the oil level is in the safe zone indicated by the marks on the end of the dipstick.
