How to change the oil on a 7.3L Powerstroke

Changing the oil in a 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel Engine is the most important maintenance procedure on this particular engine. Not only does the oil lubricates the engine but the oil is also what drives the fuel injectors in these engines and injectors are mighty expensive!! Changing your oil is a relatively easy job that should be done at least every 5,000 miles and it will save you thousands in the long run!

Things You'll Need

  • A Motorcraft Oil Filter Part #Fl-1995 or equivalent
  • 15 quarts of 15W40 diesel motor oil (Rotella, Valvoline, Motorcraft, etc.)
  • Drain plug gasket (optional)
  • 19MM open/box end wrench
  • Large oil filter wrench
  • Paper Towels
  • Waste Oil container
  • Run the truck for 5 to 10 minutes and park on a flat surface. Apply the parking brake. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap.

  • Position the waste oil container underneath the oil pan drain plug. Remove the drain plug with a 19MM open/box end wrench and let the oil drain completely.

  • Wipe off all excess oil of the oil pan and drain plug with paper towels. Fit a new drain plug gasket onto the drain plug (optional). Fasten the drain plug back into the oil pan with a 19MM open/box end wrench.

  • Reposition the waste oil container underneath the oil filter. Use a large oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter. Allow to drain completely.

  • Take the new oil filter (Motorcraft Part FL-1995) and fill it will a 1/2 quart of new 15w40 diesel motor oil. Apply a film of new motor oil to the oil filter and then spin the filter on until hand tight.

  • Using a funnel fill the engine with the remaining 14 & 1/2 quarts of 15w40 diesel motor oil through the oil filler tube. Replace the oil filler cap.

  • Run the engine for a couple minutes and then check the oil level with the dipstick add oil as necessary.
