How to Locate NYS Inspection Stations

Every 12 months, vehicles registered in New York state must receive safety and emissions inspections. Though there are some exceptions, such as for cars made before 1996, most vehicles are required by law to get these inspections each year. Every county and most cities in New York have registered inspections stations. Use New York's state Department of Motor Vehicles site to find the inspection station nearest your location.

Things You'll Need

  • Your vehicle's New York registration papers
  • Go to nydmv.state.ny.us. From the menu on the left, click the link to "Find Inspection Stations, Repair Shops, Etc." Just below the second section of text is a link that reads "Find DMV Regulated Businesses Now." Click this link.

  • Select "Public Vehicle Inspection Stations" at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, choose how you would like to search for an inspection station, by zip code or by county. You cannot search by both, so you must choose.

  • Enter your vehicle's weight. You can find this information on your registration papers, and an sample document is available on the website to help you find the information. Most passenger vehicles will fall into the first category option: vehicles 8,500 lbs. or less.

  • Choose the type of fuel that your vehicle uses on the next menu. This is also listed on your registration using a letter code, such as G for gas or E for electric. Make sure you choose correctly, as some stations only service certain types of vehicle.

  • Select which year your car was made from the menu, before 1996 or after 1996. If your car was made 25 years ago, it may not legally require yearly inspections. After entering this information, a list will appear containing the business names and addresses of every licensed inspection station in the area you chose.
