How to Change the Driveshaft on an S-10 Pickup

The driveshaft on a Chevrolet S-10 pickup connects the tail shaft of the transmission to the rear axle, allowing the two to move together in unison. The driveshaft has universal joints on both ends, which wear down over time. Although the joints can be replaced, it is sometimes easier to replace the entire driveshaft with a new one that has universal joints that are in better condition. Doing so can save money and it can also be quicker.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Replacement driveshaft
  • 24-inch pry bar
  • Drain pan
  • Lift the S-10 with the jack and place jack stands underneath all four corners of the truck, so that all four wheels are off the ground.

  • Remove the straps that connect the U-joints on the driveshaft to the rear axle with a wrench. Use the pry bar to pull the driveshaft out of the rear axle.

  • Put the drain pan below the transmission. Put the new driveshaft close to the old one, underneath the truck. Pull the old driveshaft out of the transmission and quickly put the replacement driveshaft into the transmission to minimize any spilling of the transmission fluid.

  • Tilt the end of the driveshaft into the mount on the rear axle and bolt it in place using a wrench. Lift the S-10 off the jack stands and put it back onto the ground with the jack.
