How to Get Your Tires Black

Tires need routine maintenance and cleaning to protect them and keep them in good condition. When the rubber of your tires begins to fade and become discolored this is a sign of early damage to the tire. Rubber tires have two natural enemies in the environment: UV rays and ozone. UV rays and ozone cause the quality of a tire to degrade and deteriorate. Tires also suffer from chemicals and dirt and debris from the road. Cleaning the tires and restoring the black color helps to protect the tire and ensure its longevity.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose
  • Tire cleaner and degreaser
  • Towel
  • Foam applicators
  • Tire dressing
  • Spray the tires with a garden hose to remove loose dust and dirt.

  • Clean the tires with a natural citrus-based degreaser (which can be found at an auto parts store). Spray the tire with a generous amount of degreaser and scrub the tire with a soft bristle brush. Remove all the grease, dirt and other debris.

  • Rinse the tires off with clean water to remove all left over residue from the degreaser. Dry off the tires with a towel and allow them to completely air dry.

  • Apply tire dressing to the tires with a foam applicator. Tire dressing restores the black color to the tire, and it also provides a layer of protection against UV rays and ozone damage. Purchase a tire dressing such as Eagle One Tire or Armour All at an auto parts store. Apply the dressing to the foam applicator and then use the foam applicator to apply the dressing to the tires.
