How to Check Air Pressure in a Tire in a Mazda6

Making sure that your tires are properly inflated is a good way to improve your gas mileage and steering control. Getting good gas mileage is an important part of saving money. Here's how to complete this easy do-it-yourself task and check the pressure in the tires of your Mazda6.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire gauge
  • Buy the tire pressure gauge after considering which one is right for you. You can choose from several types including ones with dials, ones with LCD readouts or ones that will talk to you.

  • Allow your tires to cool off for at least several hours before you check the pressure. Driving around will increase the pressure because heat expands the air inside your tires. Leave the task for an early morning, if possible.

  • Find and remove all of the caps from the valve stems on your tires. If you've never done this before, be sure to slip them into your pocket. Valve stem caps are magical pieces of plastic that disappear forever if you drop them.

  • Work your way around the car, checking each tire as you go. Push the tire pressure gauge to each tire on your Mazda6. You'll have to do this hard and at the right angle, or else you'll hear a hissing sound that means air is escaping from your tire. Once you find the appropriate angle for checking the pressure and the hissing stops, take a look at the readout. Write down each pressure reading with the corresponding tire.

  • Check the results against the pressure recommended by Mazda. For the Mazda6, it is recommended you keep the tire pressure between 26 and 34 psi.
