The venerable 7.3-liter IDI engine was used by Ford for years. This engine is powerful and surprisingly efficient given its diesel topology. Setting the fuel pump timing on these engines often proves to involve a little trial and error to elicit the best results. However, using the proper tools and built-in gauge indices on the engine helps you get good results.
Open the hood release to expose the engine. Locate the fuel pump, located just to the left of large radiator hose.
Remove the bolt on the top of the pump's cover, using the socket wrench and 1/4 inch socket. Loosen the bottom bolt without removing it.
Slide the top cover to the side, exposing the fuel pump. Locate the Allen bolt under the bellhousing. Use the dental mirror if necessary to help in locating this.
Reenter the truck and engage the parking brake. Under the hood, turn the Allen bolt one-quarter turn, then start the vehicle.
Turn on the truck. Determine if you have enough power/emissions balance without stuttering. Adjust the nut one-quarter turn after each test until this balance is achieved.
