What Happens When an Accelerator Cable Breaks?

Without an accelerator, or throttle, cable you'll go nowhere fast. Make sure you know how this part of your car works, and what will happen if it breaks so you'll be prepared if it happens to you.

How It Connects

  • One end of the accelerator cable connects to the gas pedal. The other connects to the throttle body or carburetor. The end of the cable near the engine is held with a locked bolt and an adjustment bolt.

How It Works

  • The accelerator cable controls how much oxygen enters the engine. The more fuel there is per air, the faster your car will accelerate.

No Acceleration

  • If your accelerator cable breaks, the only problem you are likely to encounter is that your car won't accelerate. Pushing on the pedal will had no effect on the amount of oxygen getting into the engine, a process that is necessary for acceleration.
