How to Check the Water Level on an ATV Battery

If the battery on your ATV does not have removable caps, the battery is sealed and is not serviceable. If the battery on your ATV has removable caps, your ATV has a conventional battery. Conventional ATV batteries are unsealed and can be serviced. Serviceable batteries use a mix of 65 percent water and 35 percent sulfuric acid. Since water evaporates, you need to check the fluid level in unsealed batteries at least monthly. Conventional ATV batteries are sometimes called flooded, wet cell or water batteries.

Things You'll Need

  • Distilled water
  • Remove the cap or caps from the battery cells.

  • Look in the cell of the ATV battery to check if you can see fluid. If you see fluid, do not add water. Place the cap back on the cell. If you do not see fluid or if you see an exposed lead plate, you will need to add water to the battery.

  • Slowly pour distilled water into the cell, only if you do not see fluid or see an exposed lead plate. Do not overfill. Continue to add distilled water until the fluid level is up to the level line and the lead plates are submerged.

  • Replace the battery's caps.
