How to Replace the PCV Valve on a Jeep Wrangler

The PCV valve, or positive crankcase ventilation valve, on the Jeep Wrangler is responsible for venting the excess gases and managing crankcase pressures in the engine. Changing it is a quick and easy project that will take about 10 minutes. The PCV valve is in one of three places on the Jeep Wrangler, depending on the engine. For the purpose of this article, we will be talking about the Jeep 2.4-liter engine that came in many of the Jeep Wrangler models.

Things You'll Need

  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Locate the PCV valve on your engine. On the 2.4-liter engine, it is under the throttle cable bracket and either threads into the side of the valve cover or pushes in and has a retaining bolt holding it. You will need to know which one yours has before buying a replacement.

  • Remove the black vacuum hose from the end of the PCV valve. It will just pull loose if you twist it a little as you are pulling.

  • Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover. If you have the bolt in style, use a socket and remove the retainer bolt and then pull the valve out of the valve cover. If you have the thread in style, use a wrench and turn the valve counterclockwise until it comes out of the valve cover.

  • Install the new PCV valve in the reverse order of removal. If you have the bolt-in valve, slide the PCV valve into the valve cover and install the retainer bolt. Tighten the bolt with a socket and ratchet. If you have the screw-in style, thread the PCV valve into the hole, turning it clockwise until it is tight. Use a wrench to tighten.

  • Push the vacuum hose onto the barbed end of the PCV valve. It does not need a clamp, as the vacuum from the motor will keep it in place when the engine is running.
