Jeep Cherokee XJ Four-Link LTS

Got a built-up Cherokee, but need a better front long long-arm setup with almost perfect geometry? The crew at Synergy Suspension has just the thing for you: The company’s new four-link link XJ Long Travel System is a system that can be added to any existing lift kit, or it can be used as a starting kit on a stock Cherokee that you want to add coil springs, shocks, and rear leaf springs to.

Synergy’s main goal with the Long Travel System is improving steering/suspension geometry and allowing increased wheel travel. The system also dramatically improves handling and overall vehicle dynamics. It’s a full bolt-on DIY system and can be completed in your driveway with basic tools. For added strength, you can weld the kit to the subframe.

Stock Jeep Cherokee Photo 58613054 The Cherokee we started with was a reminder of poor upkeep and almost total neglect. XJ Cherokees are one of the few vehicles that can take this sort of abuse, keep going, and be revived for a reasonable cost.

The control arms are designed to maximize ground clearance and will allow the use of OEM wheels with up to a 33-inch tire size (turning steering lock to lock), without the need of wheel spacers. Thirty fve-inch-tall tires can be used with minor fender trimming and 3.5-inch backspaced wheels. A 1.5-inch rear lift shackle compliments the long travel leaf springs. The stock front driveshaft will work for most applications. For this install we reused the stock front driveline and bolted up a custom rear JE Reel driveshaft to avoid problems down the trail. A slip yoke eliminator is required for the rear transfer case output for most lifted XJs to prohibit driveline vibration, so an Advance Adapters SYE Kit was also used on this build.

Synergy’s kit can be optioned with Fox’s high-performance IFP shocks, Synergy front coil springs, and Deaver rear springs to round out the package if you’re starting from scratch. This particular Cherokee was totally stock, so we went with every option we could.

After you turn the last bolt, you are ready to tackle the next Jeepspeed race on the schedule. Follow along as we install Synergy’s proven suspension system for the XJ Cherokee.

PhotosView Slideshow The Synergy long-arm system can be a great
addition to an already-lifted XJ or as a starting
suspension for a stock Cherokee. It includes an
XJ front frame bracket set, upper and lower long
arms, and HD rear leaf spring hangers. The long
arms feature Currie Enterprises Johnny Joints
and Synergy Double Adjusters for durability
and easy adjustment. The steering is improved
and strengthened with the use of the Synergy
HD Trackbar Bracket & Brace Kit. The Synergy
Double Adjuster assembly allows for quick and
easy adjustment of control arm and track bar
lengths without removing suspension bolts. Since we were in the process of prepping the
undercarriage, it was the perfect time to ready
the front axle for the install. Because 33-inch
tires are enough to slow a Cherokee with stock
gearing way down, the front Dana 30 axle was
complemented with some 4.88:1 Yukon Gear
gears along with 27-spline Yukon Gear chromoly
axleshafts. We also added Synergy’s Front Axle
Assurance bracing kit that comes with inner
sleeves, inner C gussets, and control arm skids. To install Synergy’s long-arm brackets, the
upper and lower control arm brackets will need
to be trimmed off the unit body in order to clear
the long arms being installed.
The four-link kit
clears 33-inch tires with OEM wheels. The long-arm brackets can be either bolted or
welded into place. For maximum strength, careful
welding would be best. But unit body Jeeps
can be tricky to weld to, so the brackets can be
installed completely and securely with bolts. The track bar bracket not only provides a new
mounting point for the new Synergy track bar, it
also has a frame bracing bar that goes from one
unit body rail over to the other. Fox Performance Series IFP shocks with
aluminum bodies were opted onto this XJ. While
the basic Synergy 4-Link Long Travel System
comes without springs, shocks, or brake lines,
all these parts are offered as options should you
desire. The bushing/rod end extended sway bar
links come standard in the kit, though. With the front end put back together, you can
see how much better the angles are, even at full
suspension droop. This kit was made with the
intentions of keeping almost perfect geometry
throughout the entire suspension movement. It’s not as simple as just adding leaf springs
for this kit. New spring hangers are given to
make the rear suspension even more robust
and resistant to damage. The stock rear spring
hangers need to be cut off at the front of the
rear leaf springs. Some 3⁄8-inch holes also need
to be drilled into the floor in preparation. Synergy’s new spring hangers bolt directly
in place once the stock hangers are removed
and the holes are drilled. High quality grade 8
hardware is included and used throughout the
Synergy kit. Long-Travel Boomerang shackles are longer
and provide 1.5-inches of lift while also giving
the leaf spring more ability up and down for
more travel. Deaver prerunner leaf springs were
used in conjunction with the Synergy 4-Link
Long Travel Kit. This kit still uses stock-length
(eye-to-eye) leaf springs, so you can still buy
off-the-shelf springs that are readily available.
We matched the rear to the front with another
pair of Fox Performance Series 2.0 IFP Shocks.
The Synergy wheel adapters are not necessary
for this kit and were only used to put factory
JK take-off wheels and tires on our XJ to save
some money. jeep cherokee xj jumping
