The Jeep Grand Cherokee has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) wheel sensor on each wheel that provides the wheel speed to the ABS controller. The ABS controller uses that information to determine the amount of braking force to apply to that wheel. You may need to replace the ABS wheel sensor if it becomes clogged with debris, especially metallic brake dust.
Determine which ABS wheel sensor your Jeep Grand Cherokee will need. You'll want to be sure the new wheel sensor is compatible with your make and model of Grand Cherokee. All versions of the Grand Cherokee are equipped with ABS.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the tire and wheel assembly if you are replacing a front wheel sensor. Disconnect the mounting bolts for the brake calipers with a socket wrench and support the caliper assembly so that it does not hang by the brake hose. Remove the disc brake rotor with a socket wrench.
Unfasten the front wheel speed sensor mounting nut and release the routing clips for the front wheel sensor's electrical cable. Unplug the connector for the front wheel speed sensor and remove the sensor from the wheel hub.
Remove the mounting bolt for the rear wheel speed sensor from the rear support plate with a socket wrench. Remove the sensor from the support plate and disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
Install the new wheel speed sensor by reversing the removal steps. Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel speed sensor mounting nut to between 106 and 124 in. lbs. Torque the brake caliper mounting bolts to between 66 and 85 ft. lbs.
