So you've built a high boost or high compression engine to dish out some serious horsepower and have backed that investment up with solid fuel management. You're in the hunt for the coveted quickest lap at Buttonwillow Raceway, only you've come to realize that your ignition system isn't what its cracked up to be. The RPM needle quickly climbs past redline followed by a series of stumbling and hesitation that is associated with a weak ignition spark. AEM has the perfect solution for those misfiring woes and underachieving coil packs.

It is marketed as the lightest, smallest, and most cost effective ignition module on the market-ideal for applications that utilize aftermarket standalone engine management systems. The AEM C2DI was a smashing success with high- performance enthusiasts and top racers throughout the world, such as the AEM sponsored drag Civic piloted by Stephan Papadakis. He piloted the pro RWD machine to multiple championships. This year, during the 2005 SEMA convention, AEM once again revolutionized the automotive market with the debut of their newest C2DI Multi-channel ignition system. This time around, marketed in an extruded black enclosure, the Twin Fire Ignition Module still posses the unique C2DI system that is patent pending through AEM along with some improved features and an unbeatable price that's sure to entice any skeptic from here to Japan.

What is the C2DI?
Simply stated, the C2DI is AEM's patent pending technology featuring twin storage capacitors (189mJ spark per capacitor), allowing for the fastest full energy recharge on the market today. AEM's twin cap technology stores the energy for two distinct spark events and allows for full spark energy for each individual sparkplug. The final outcome is a C2DI technology that delivers full energy to the spark plug at engine speeds exceeding 10,000 RPM and has the functionality to operate with battery voltage as low as 5-volts. The lightning fast recharge becomes an integral component for vehicles looking to sustain consistent spark at higher RPM's and producing horsepower in the process. AEM states their C2DI produces more spark energy and spark voltage per spark than any other available CDI unit on the market today.

Boosting up the voltage
The Twin Fire Ignition Module produces a fast, high-energy pulse that is applied to the ignition coil at over 500 volts and up to 30 amps. A standard inductive igniting system typically produces only about 250 volts on the coil primary. This higher voltage is what allows the coil to produce a much higher spark voltage. A typical ignition coil (1:100 turns ratio) with an inductive ignition will produce approximately 25,000 volts to the spark plug. Using the Twin Fire system on the same coil produces twice the spark at a whopping 50,000 volts or more at the spark plug.

Multi-Strike
It's often the case with many high performance vehicles that idle, engine startup and throttle response is sacrificed for top end performance. The Twin Fire ignition utilizes a "multi-strike" system (capable up to 10 sparks per ignition) triggers the spark plug to fire multiple times at lower RPM's to eliminate these nuance problems. These additional sparks occur at approximately 20 degrees of crank rotation. And for all you rotary fanatics, fear not. The AEM Twin Fire ignition system was created with rotaries in mind. The unit allows for both usage of leading and trailing spark plugs and is able to get full spark energy on each plug, independent of split timing amount.

Single Channel vs. Multi Channel
In comparison with the standard CDI (capacitive discharge system) that uses a single channel, the Twin Fire is a multi channel system that is tailored to many of the newer cars that possess multiple ignition coils. The Twin Fire system also has the ability to run on a distributor-less system with the correct components. The standard single-channel CDI systems often found on the market today has the limited capability of driving only one coil which AEM states is fine if you have a distributor or a single cylinder engine.
