Project Lexus SC300 - Tech Review - Turbo Magazine

Things are on the ragged edge. It's less than a month before the SEMA show and our Lexus SC300 is creeping its way closer to the paint booth at Body Pros. Meanwhile, at SP Engineering it's warp speed engaged as our 2JZ-GTE is ready to roll.

As we outlined in the December 2003 issue, the bottom end was built and ready, but since then the long block has been completed. The JE Piston/Crower rod-fortified block has been topped with a Port Flow Design-prepped head fitted with Ferrea valvetrain components and HKS 272 bumpsticks.

Our boost source is an HKS T04-R single-turbo conversion kit that features a stainless-steel custom manifold, stout HKS wastegate and Super Power Flow intake. The appropriate parts have been Swain coated and the kit has been installed on the engine, along with most of the accessories.

The T04-R will pressurize a trick Veilside Surgetank intake. The two-piece intake is a work of art. It sports a huge volume plenum and features individual runners that efficiently direct flow to the engine. The intake kit also includes a billet fuel rail and anodized 100mm throttle body. The casting on the runners was especially gritty so we elected to grind down the sandy interior surface and polish the runners to further improve the flow.

The turbo system will be joined by a GReddy front-mount intercooler, Blitz 720cc injectors and GReddy EVO exhaust system. Tuning will be handled by an HKS F-CON V Pro computer and we're looking for around 700 whp, but will tune to the air/fuel ratio, not a number.

Stay tuned. We hope to have a more definitive report and better progress in the next issue.
