In 2014 my Scion FR-S saw its share of performance and exterior upgrades. This year I've decided to give some love to the interior. When I was at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon I visited the Vertex booth and scooped up a monochrome white shift knob, which is discontinued in United States. Additionally I ordered myself a King of Vertex suede steering wheel. To stay consistent with the JDM theme, I went to A Spec in El Monte, Calif., for its Works Bell short hub and a black Rapfix II quick release. I turned to Young Tea from Auto Tuned to handle the install.

The first and one of the most crucial steps is to disconnect the battery and let it discharge for about 15 minutes to avoid deploying any airbags. There are three holes in the column cover immediately behind the steering wheel - one on each side and one at the bottom - where you'll need to grab a flathead screwdriver to push a pin inward while pulling out the airbag.

Once you have access to the airbag use the same screwdriver to lift the yellow tabs on the orange and black mounts. Disconnect the cruise control and loosen the 17mm nut holding the steering wheel. Only loosen the center bolt enough where you can pull the steering wheel to avoid hitting it with your face.

While removing the steering wheel, be careful not to damage the clockspring. It can set off the check engine light and is a pricey replacement.

You can then line up the Works Bell short hub, reinstall the 17mm nut, and connect the included resistors to the black and orange wires. Tuck all the wires into the hub and bolt the back socket section of the Rapfix II. The biggest difference between Rapfix I and II is the one-step attach and detach. The Rapfix II is constructed with cold forged aluminum, which makes it lighter than its predecessor. It features a ball locking design that won't come off while driving.

Bolt on the body of the quick release onto the steering wheel and insert it into the socket portion. To remove the steering wheel, simply push the safety button, draw the sleeve, and pull.
