How to Stop an Auto AC Leak

Automotive air conditioner leaks can pose a major repair problem, and if your vehicle has a major issue, you will likely need to take the vehicle to a certified mechanic. The equipment needed is expensive and generally not available to the general public. Also, the air conditioner is a complex system. There is something a home mechanic can do. Minor leaks can easily be patched. Before taking the vehicle in, try using a system sealer fluid in the air conditioner. Different brands of system sealers are widely available and fairly easy to use.

Things You'll Need

  • Air conditioner system sealer fluid
  • Freon recharging kit
  • Warm up your automobile. Once it reaches its standard running temperature, run the air conditioner at the coldest possible temperature. Switch the air-blower's capacity at the highest setting.

  • Release the hood and prop it open. Search within the engine compartment for the air conditioning system's pipes. They are made of metal. You will find two different pipe widths. The thinner one will be connected to your automobile's compressor, and it will feature a low-side pressure connection.

  • Uncap the low-side pressure connection and connect the container of stop leak fluid. The container will have a hose or a tube ending in a plastic coupler. Fit the coupler over the low side connection.

  • Add system sealer into the air conditioner, which is usually done by inverting the can and pressing the release button. The amount may vary by brand, so refer to the instructions on the packages. Some types include a gauge which tells you when enough fluid has been discharged into the system. Detach the stop leak container.

  • Attach a Freon recharging kit to the low side connection. Turn the nozzle atop the kit downwards and release Freon into the system. Keep an eye on the kit's pressure gauge. Your system may not need a full Freon recharge.

  • Detach the Freon recharging kit from the low side connection. Let both the engine and the air conditioner run for 15 more minutes. This will circulate the new freon and the stop leak fluid completely through the system.
