1997 Ford F-350 - Keepin’ Up With The Joneses: Part 1

While we never thought we’d take our ’97 F-350 this far, it’s happened. After driving around what seemed like the perfect daily-driven 500hp combination for more than a year (S366 turbo, 238/80 hybrid injectors, Adrenaline high-pressure oil pump), we just couldn’t leave well enough alone. Our lust for both more power and keeping pace with newer trucks is what this three-part series is all about. So, with a trip over to Flynn’s Shop, we pulled the Stage 3 238/80 injectors and shipped them back to Unlimited Diesel Performance to be transformed into Stage 4 300/200s. In preparation for the added power, Flynn’s also handled a few insurance items for us, such as checking the torque on our head studs and servicing the transmission. Once the 300/200s arrived, the old-body-style Ford was fired up and taken to the dragstrip for some immediate results. Next time, we’ll see how the truck’s current S366 turbo performs on the dyno with the new injectors in the mix, and after that we’ll install an S400, go after 550 rwhp, and head back to the track. Racing Time Slip   |   Eager to see what the truck could do with the 300/200s, we hit the local eighth-mile dragstrip before heading to the dyno. To shed weight, we pulled the tailgate, bedliner, all of our tools, and showed up low on fuel, which put us just under 7,100 pounds. With a hard, boosted launch, we were able to nab a 1.77- second 60-foot time on our way to an 8.26-second pass at 81 mph. Our elapsed time converts to a high 12-second quarter-mile and, according to the horsepower calculator, we’re making between 510 and 530 rwhp with the S366. In the coming months, we’ll see what kind of horsepower we make on the dyno, and how much more power we make with a 68mm S400.
