Off-Road Tire Test - General Grabber

For some people, a standard-issue all-terrain tire isn’t quite good enough. These people usually enjoy driving fast across some of the harshest terrain the desert southwest has to offer. To them, wet weather performance is low on the list of priorities, and snow is given merely a passing thought. It is these people that the General Grabber was built for. These tires are among the strongest and most durable on the market. They have a seven-ply tread and three-ply sidewall, which offer outstanding resistance to cuts and punctures. To thoroughly test this beast of a tire, we mounted a set of 35x12.50R17s on Fuel Off-Road Anza beadlock wheels and slapped them on our purpose-built desert prerunner. We then headed for the hills to give them the shakedown they deserve.   |   General Grabber Tread The Grabber’s patented Strake & Chamfer tread pattern provided great traction in both sand and loose gravel conditions. The large tread blocks and flexible compound help to keep small stones from sticking in the tread and drilling into the tire. Thanks to the tire’s large tread footprint, the set exhibited less of a tendency to want to dig, which worked well for our two-wheel drive test truck. With the tire pressure reduced from what’s run on the street, the sidewalls had fairly decent flex, despite the tire’s E load rating. The sidewall, composed of General’s proprietary Duragen rubber compound, proved to be plenty strong for our abuse with no noticeable gouges or scrapes. The overall performance of the Grabber off-road was excellent, offering great traction and giving us confidence to drive with little worry. The biggest drawback for us was the tire’s weight, with our test subjects tipping the scale at 79 pounds each. However, the strength, heavy-duty construction, and excellent off-road traction are enough for us to overlook the weight.
