Auto Insurance Claims: Fender bender, claims advice, claim help

Question
The other night, I parked my Frontier at the corner of an intersection. Upon retuning two hours later, i found an accident form from the local university police. It seems that one of the school mini-buses had swiped my front bumper. the officers estimate of damage was $1000.

I have a $500 deductible w my insurer, GEICO, and was told that they could not 'guarantee' that they would be able to collect from the campus vehicle's insurer. Should i attempt to deal directly with the schools insurer? I'd rather not have to spend the $500 out of pocket.

Answer
Hi John,

Absolutely!  You can be certain that the school has property liability coverage.  They are obligated to pay as long as they are at fault.  (I am assuming that you were legally parked.)
They are also obligated to pay for a rental car while your car is in repair.

Oh, and by the way, with all due respect to our friends the police ... they are not auto damage estimators.  If it's a good sideswipe, the damage will probably exceed $1000.  But that, of course, has no bearing on your claim. They're still responsible, regardless of the cost of the sideswipe.

I wish you well.
