Auto Insurance Claims: Rental reinbursement, rental car agency, reinbursement

Question
I was involved in an auto accident 3 weeks ago, the other party was at fault. I don't have rental coverage on my policy, but I contacted the other party's insurance company and they agreed to reimburse me. I am a college student and do not have a lot of money. My car has been in the shop for three weeks and I have had to pay the rental on my own.  I am completely out of money and I feel like I am being taken advantage of.  It is not my fault that their client hit me and I am now out of a car.  My account is nearing the negatives.  Does this type of thing happen all the time or am I being taken advantage of?? Please help!!

Answer
Hi Cyndi,

I'm sorry your going through this. Unfortunately, some insurance companies do handle things this way. You can try to call the insurance company and explain your situation and ask them to set up a direct billing with the rental car agency. However, sometimes the insurance companies do this just to squeeze you in hopes you will give up the rental car and borrow a friends car which will save them money. This is a good life lesson for you to learn, never trust that any insurance company will do the right thing; not even your own.

You might also ask your body shop if there is anything they can do. They may be willing to have the rental billed to them, however this may make it harder to get reimbursement.

I hope this helps
