Auto body repair & detailing: Blending a quarter panel, jackie steele, two coats

Question

I recently a nice dent in the rear quarter of my older Chev 4x4.  I am a hobby painter using base clear but have never belended so I wanted to try. I repaired the spot, primed, and ruffed up about a 1 ft pass the primer.  I cleaned the area, layed down the base 2 coats with the second out a 1 inch more thna the first.  Allowed it to flash and applied my clear 4-5 inches out passed the base 2 coats. All looked good, waited a day to, wet sanded my dull area and began to buff but I can't get rid of the ridge line on the clear.  I have just read about BLENDING Solvent, is this my problem and what is its purpose.

Great Service you offer here.

Regards,

Jackie Steele

Answer
Blending solvent thins out the clear and allows you to chase out your blend farther. Making for a smoother blend area. Just apply your two coats of clear one farther then out then the last. Then dump out most of the clear from your gun leaving about a half inch. Then dump in a half inch blending solvent. Then spray out one last coat of clear stretching out the blend so it is nice and smooth.
Scuff a extra few inches around the repair area lightly for the last coat to blend in.
