Auto body repair & detailing: Rustproofing/Paint protection, rust proofing, paint protection

Question
Hi Notto:

I am purchasing a 2007 Honda Fit.  I will NOT be taking the dealer rustproofing and paint protection; however, I do want to do what's best for this vehicle to keep it in tip top shape.  I plan to keep this for a minimum of 12 years, so I want to preserve the body and paint as well as the mechanical.  I live in Canada and the winters tend to be very harsh (plus lots of salt on the roads).  My question is:  are there any benefits to one kind of rustproofing over another?  Is the "Ziebart-style" kind as good as or better (or worse) than the yearly oil spraying?  What about the annual paint protection?

There seem to be a lot of different opinions about these products and I'm finding it difficult sorting out fact from fiction.  I don't want to get ripped off, but I do want to look after my vehicle well.

Thanks for your help.  Regards, Jay

Answer
Jay,
I understand your desire to keep the new car new!! Rust is scary and you're right there is a lot of opinion out there on the topic.  One of the best threads I've read on the topic is below.

One of the important points of rust proofing is having it checked regulary for rust.  Some product dealers include this in the service and you'd be wise to take full advantage of this, since we all rarely get under our car with a good light.

The best paint protection plan is to find a good reputable detailing shop and for 150 bucks or so, have it polished and waxed every year at least, but preferrably every 6 to 9 months.  Plus it will look awesome!
Hope that helps,
