Auto Parts: running rich, goodheart wilcox, ford ranchero

Question
I have a '79 Ford Ranchero. The smog guy told me that it is 'running rich'. I think I can adjust this myself with some instruction. Yes,I'm a 'girl', but, I have learned alot about my car-from hours of reading...,and by hands on instruction from knowledgable mechanics who had the patience to show me what to do and what NOT to do!  If you could recommend any reading material or videos, dvd's, etc. I would be FOREVER greatful!

Answer
Haynes has an excellent manual available on their website.  http://www.haynes.com/products/productID/155  I have found that they are the best source for DIY manuals and information.  I would not trust the "smog guy" for a diagnosis.  A rich mixture at the tailpipe can come from a lot of things.  Before you even touch the fuel system you should give the ignition system a complete tuneup.  Gas that has not burned due to ignition problems gives the same readings as too much gas from the carburetor.  Start with eight plugs, new wires, new cap and rotor.  Check the timing (try to borrow a timing light).  You could buy a timing light if you know you are going to keep the car for a long time, but they aren't of much use on '81 and newer cars.  Wait until you can read the manual to do all of this, there are things that are easy to screw up unless you know what to look for.  If you are lead to rebuilding the carburetor, do it yourself.  Don't buy a rebuilt carb.  This may be one of the simplest carburetors in the world and there is no excuse for getting someone else to do it for you.  Do make sure that you replace the float, choke pull-off, choke spring, and the gasket under the spacer below the carb (this doesn't always come with the kit).  If you still want to learn more, buy a copy of the Goodheart-Wilcox Automotive Encyclopedia, it has everything.
