Auto Parts: 97 Corolla Door Lock Jammed, window cranks, wd 40

Question
The front passenger door lock on my '97 Corolla is jammed in the lock position. I can put the key in but I'm not able to turn the key very far. I can see the knob start to rise a little then all action stops. I cannot lift the knob from the inside either. I sprayed WD-40 into the lock and this hasn't helped. I'm willing to try taking the panel off to look inside but don't know how to remove the panel.

Answer
Hi Dave,

You're in luck. MOST door panels are only held on with plastic or metal-spring clips. USUALLY all you need to do is remove the screw that holds the door handle bezel on and the two screws holding the door pull on. If you have manual windows you'll also need to remove the window crank and if you have the lock-knob you'll probably have to remove that also, not sure how it's fastened but probably screws off of the actuator arm. There is a small clip on the back of it and if you do not have the special tool used to remove window cranks, simply pry between the crank and door panel slightly until you see the tiny metal clip. Get a thin, small screw driver and snap the clip off. the rest of the panel should just need a tug to get it off. Start at the bottom and pull the panel out and slightly up because it is probably anchored on the top by the window-track pinch-weld channel. Replacement is in reverse and remember to line each clip up to the hole in the door shell before pressing into place to make sure it fits properly and snugly.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
