Auto Parts: Mass Air Flow Sensor, mass air flow sensor, jeep cherokee sport

Question
Where is the mass air flow sensor located on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport? The reason I ask is my check engine light is on and when I get to about 60 mph my truck starts to jerk back
on me and a friend of mine told me it could me the mass air flow sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Eric,

Sounds more like a lack of fuel (fuel filter blocked?) than it does a MAF sensor. The MAF sensor only measures the amount of air going to the engine, the ECM or engine management system only uses the information from the MAF to determine IF the engine is running which is why it's often referred to as the Air-Flow Meter. Spark, timing and fuel metering are controlled by the TPS, O2 sensor(s) and the crank or cam trigger sensor.

But to answer your question, I'm pretty sure the MAF sensor on your vehicle will be mounted on the throttle-body and you'd either need to purchase that new or buy an entire Throttle-body assembly to replace it.

Start simple, replace the air and fuel filters. Attach a gage to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and make sure it is within specs and then run a volume test because I will bet that's where you'll locate your problem.

Engines only stall from lack of air if you physically choke the engine by completely blocking the opening in the throttle-body. An engine is essentially a big air-pump. If it runs out of air to pump, it stops. If you're driving down the road trying to push 75mph out of her and she starts to sputter, think fuel!

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
