Car Alarms: Mirage 9500 Alarm Remotes Work Intermittently, toyota sr5 pickup, authorized alarm

Question
Hi!  I have a 1993 Toyota SR5 pickup with a Mirage 9500 alarm with two remotes that was installed by the dealer when the truck was bought new in 1993.  Recently the remotes have started working only intermittently.  The remotes have two buttons but only button one is used to either turn the alarm on or off.  For the past month there will be times when I press the button and nothing will happen.  I try the second remote and it also will do nothing.  I can press the button many times on either remote and nothing will happen.  After a few minutes it might start working again from using either remote.  I put new batteries in both remotes and they both still have the same problem.  Either they both work or they both don't work.  Since both work or don't work at the same time, I'm convinced its not the remotes but the alarm itself that has the problem.  What is wrong?  Is the receiver in the alarm going bad or straying off frequency?  I called Code-Alarm, the manufacturer (got the 800 number from my 17 year old owners manual) and all they said was take it to a local authorized alarm shop.  I went to the local authorized shop and all they said they could do was replace it with a viper alarm.  I want to keep this alarm.  I like the way it works (when it works).  Any ideas what's wrong and how I can fix it?

Thanks!
