Car Alarms: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer Factory Alarm, mercury mountaineer, remote starter

Question
QUESTION: I recently had the alternator replaced. Since then, the car will randomly not start. No crank, just dead. I found that if I clicked the lock unlock buttons on the key it will often start. It does seem worse in the morning. At the same time the alarm has been going off intermittently and often after that it will turn on. I tried disconnecting the battery. When I rehooked it up the alarm went off and scared the crap out of me. Then it started. I also notice that if I lock the door before closing the door and then close the door it chirps. I do not know if I can just disconnect the alarm, reset it or what. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

ANSWER: Troublesome system, and not an uncommon issue
by a long shot.

Unfortunately ,this vehicle has Ford's PATS
(PASSIVE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM) key based
engine disabling system, and the codes were wiped when you
powered down the vehicle for longer then 3 hours.

Now, my expertise is in disabling
the PATS for remote start applications,
but if it's me, on this car, I would suggest
the PKFM bypass kit to get around the
issue for good.

This Bypass Module is designed to momentarilly
allow the engine to remote start by sending a proper
coded pulse to open the fuel rail passlock injector
cut off circuit.

The output from an alarm/remote starter
would then shut down the pulse, once it has detected
the engine has engaged, and preserve the integrity
of the PATS system.

That is it's designed purpose.

However, in your case, this input wire on
the PKFM module, instead of going to a
momentary ground pulse from an
alarm/remote starter, would go to a
constant chassis ground, through
the bypass module, grounding out the PATS.
The PATS would always be bypassed as long
as that wire is chassis grounded.
IMPORTANT! You MUST have the original programmed
keys to program the bypass module!
Then any store bought key will work.

I can not speak about a damaged PATS system,
like if a thief has destroyed it, because I do not
get into this part of FORD'S security application.
But as a happy coincidence to installing
after market remote starters, this does work on bypassing
trnasponder in most all FORD vehicles we've run into,
including your year FORD vehicle as well.

Also, this is a self learning, resistor sensing
and adjusting module. Once the PATS wires have been tapped,
you would press the program button to learn,
and it does. The car should then allow start
with any hardware store key.

I can't guaranty it would work here,
but for 70.00 might be the best shot you have
before the "totalled" diagnosis can be verified.

I'm confident it will work on this one
as well.

QUESTION: Thanks Robert. If the codes are wiped out then why is the problem intermittent? I would think it would be consistent. Is the module available at the website shown?

Thanks,
Paul

Answer
Hmmm, I'd still get the module and circumvent it, but the
"intermittent" thing is a little puzzle.
Likely as not though, the sensor in the
ignition switch for the PATS is, or is starting to go bad.

The bypass would be farther down the steering column and
would make the switch sensor irrelevant. :>)
