Car Stereos: 2000 Taurus CD Changer Problem, salvage yard, cd changer

Question
This Taurus I bought has a CD Changer in the center console, but the cartridge is missing. I bought a cd changer with cartridge at a parts salvage yard and the cartridge doesn't fit. I was wondering if I could install the one I got from salvage yard and if horizontal or vertical mounting mattered.

Answer
Hi Chris,

I honestly don't know whether your replacement changer would work with the factory system or not.  All the Taurus changers I've seen have been vertically mounted in the trunk; they connect directly to the amplifier/tuner pack on the back of the driver-side wheel well.  I've never seen one mounted in the center console area.  You might want to try just connecting it and testing it before you mount it.

Usually, if a CD changer is designed for a vertical mount, the suspension system won't work as effectively when it's horizontally mounted.  This results in more skipping.  Sometimes there's an adjustment slot on the side that can be set for horizontal or vertical mounting.

Hope this helps!
