Car Stereos: stereo turns blue, headlight circuit, radio harness

Question
Hi i am asking a question about something my 03 altima does first off i installed a flip up 7" indash the brand is nitro (i know super cheap) and after i installed it using a wiring harness adapter i turned it on and all was good everything worked till i turned on my headlights. When i turned them on the screen went immediatly blue and stopped playing but it didnt shutdown and if i just pull my high beam switch back the stereo is not affected, only with just the headlights. Im really hoping to get some good advice i also have a dual indash should i hook it up and see if that one works fine?

Answer
Hi Rudy,

That's definitely an odd problem.  There's really no wiring in the stock radio harness that's connected to the headlights--there are illumination wires, but they're tied into the parking light circuit, not the headlight circuit.  Does the problem occur if you switch on your parking lights, but leave the headlights off?  If so, you might have mis-wired an connection to an illumination wire.

In a Nissan, your head unit's black ground wire should be connected directly to the metal dash structure in the radio cavity, not to any wire in the radio harness.  It's common for illumination wires to get mixed up with ground wires; so I'd check the ground wire.  If you don't find a wiring problem, then I'd try the Dual head unit and see what happens.  It's possible that your head unit is just oddly sensitive to the change in system voltage that occurs when you turn the lights on.

Hope this helps!
