Car Stereos: Dual XD1222 vs. Hyundai Accent 05, mercury cougar, accent gt

Question
QUESTION: I am preparing to purchase a deck an amp and a 10'' Subwoofer to install into my Accent.  Is there anything extremely important that I should know before I make the purchase and begin to install myself. I have installed a system into my old Mercury Cougar which was a little rough, however this vehicle's wiring is new to me and I don't want to mess it up. Just any pointers you have would be appreciated. Thanks Brian!

ANSWER: Hi Chris,

There's nothing special about the Accent that should affect the audio components you choose.  Just be sure to get the correct radio mounting kit and wire harness adapter for the Hyundai.  It's possible to mount the new head unit without a kit, using the factory radio brackets; but it requires some modification of the brackets and the kit makes the job much easier.

Dash removal can be tricky in the Accent, because you need to remove the climate control module along with the dash bezel, and there are some control cables that run from the climate control module back to various parts of the vent assembly under the dash.  You can't remove the dash bezel (and take out the radio) until you release these cables at the other end; and when you put the dash panel back in place, you'll need to pay attention to the routing of the cables and make sure they're re-connected in the same position.  The instruction manual that comes with the mounting kit should give you the information you need for this task.

Hope this helps!

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hey Brian, thanks for the help figuring out how to remove the bezel, I have a follow up question, I'm trying to figure out how to hard wire the new harness, because I have not been able to find a company that sells a proper wiring harness adapter. I have not yet cut any of the stock wires, but I am trying to find an accurate Wiring Harness Diagram the technical make of the vehicle is a '05 Accent GT 2dr and it seems to have a different wiring harness than what ModifiedLife says for the stock '05 Accent.  If you know anywhere I can get the adapter, or if you know a place I can get an accurate diagram of the harness let me know. Thanks again bud, you guys are awesome!

Answer
Hi Chris,

According to my information, any 05 Accent should use a Metra 70-7301 wire harness.  However, the 2006 models use a completely different harness: the 70-1004.  Your best bet is to remove the factory radio and take it directly to a car audio store that does installations; they should keep both harnesses in stock, and they'll be able to match the plug on the back of the stock radio to get you the right adapter.  I don't advise trying to install the head unit without an adapter harness, if there's any chance of obtaining one.

Note that if your vehicle requires the newer wire harness, it will probably need a different mounting kit as well.

Hope this helps!
