Car Stereos: speakers, factory speakers, component speakers

Question

yes i am looking to see how hard it would be to add one to the area where there is one in the 96 taurus by the side mirrors.

Answer
Hi Nick,

The amount of work involved isn't *too* much, but there is a fair bit.

First, you'll need to buy a set of component speakers.  The reason for this is that the current front speakers in the car provide the correct resistance for the factory deck, and by adding speakers to the front channel, you'd either be increasing the resistance on the circuit by putting them in series, thereby losing much of the deck's output power, or decreasing the resistance by putting them in parallel, thereby possibly frying the deck.

So first you'd need to buy a set of component speakers with separate midrange and tweeters.  You could mount the tweeters up in the plastic (with a little bit of cutting and moulding to make them fit) by the window, and the mids down where the factory speakers are.  Then hook them up to the system and you'd be good to go.

It'd take a little bit of work, but with patience you should be able to pull it off.

Good luck,
Justin
