Car Stereos: Wiring a after market head unit into a grand am, wire colors, pontiac grand am

Question
I have a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am, i was trying to install a new cd player but the wire color for the tape deck dont match up with the wire colors for the adapter 4 the head unit. i was wondering if u could tell me how to wire th enew head unit up or tell me what each radio wire is by its color. thanks

Answer
Hi Brian,

Instead of going through the trial and error of trying to match colours, leave the factory harness in the car, and buy an aftermarket wiring harness for the new deck.  You can get it at any car stereo shop, and it will make life infinitely easier for you.  It should only cost ~$15-20 at most and save a world of time and frustration.

With an aftermarket harness, you will simply connect/solder the matching colours of the new deck's harness to the aftermarket harness, and then clip it into your factory harness, and the other end into your new deck.
