Car Stereos: wiring speakers to amp, wiring speakers, rcas

Question
I was wondering do I wire my speakers to the back of my cd player and rca to the amp? or do i wire speakers to the amp and use rca cords to my cd player. if it is to the amp the rf- & rb- to one then lf- & lb- to one then rf+ & rb+ to one then lf+ & lb+ to one?

Answer
Hi Julie,

Your options depend on how many speakers are in your car, and how many channels are on your amp.

If your car has 4 speakers, and the amp has 4 channels, you run the RCAs off of the deck to the amp, and then each speaker goes to each channel on the amp via fresh speaker wire.

If your amp is 2 channel and your car has 4 speakers, you have 2 options: the first is to hook up the two bigger speakers to the 2 channels on the amp, and run the RCAs, and then run the remaining 2 speakers off of the deck.  Your other option (presuming your amp can safely run at 2ohms per channel [the manual will tell you]), is to run both left speakers off of one channel and both right off of the other.  The downside to this is that you'll lose your fader ability.

If I haven't covered your scenario, let me know, provide more details, and I'll see what I can figure out.

Also, should any of the speaker wires coming out of the deck not be hooked up to anything, make sure they're safely capped off and don't run any risk of touching anything they shouldn't and causing a short.

Good luck,
Justin
