Car Stereos: a question about what a fuse stands for, 2000 chevy cavalier, chevy cavalier

Question
QUESTION: i have a 2000 chevy cavalier and i was looking threw the fuses on the driver side and noticed one said AMPL...i am planning to put in subwoofers and will need a amplifier to power it;.. and i need to know wut the fuse AMPL stands for. i would appreciate it if you could return this information back to me as soon as possible

ANSWER: Hi Scott,

The AMPL fuse is for the audio amplifier in the car.  If you have the 'monsoon' system, it's the fuse that runs to the factory amp.

If you don't, it's possible the fuse is doing absolutely nothing.

None of that should matter anyway; if you're putting in an aftermarket amplifier, you'll need to bypass the factory one (unless you're adding speakers), and in that case, it should have its own fuses inline on the fresh power wire you run for it.

QUESTION: so i wont need to worry about the ampl fuse if i bought the subwoofers from a store...i also need to know if i could wire the subwoofer into the car without having to add a aftermarket amplifier...the subwoffer is a 1100w sub i was told i will need one from a friend but am not for sure

Answer
Hi Scott,

Yes, you will most certainly need an amp to run it.  You'll need to check your factory stereo to see if it has RCA pre-outs.  If it does not, you'll need an amp that can do speaker level input and tap into the wires running to the speakers and run those into the new amp.  And ignore the fuses in your fuse box now; you should buy a full amp kit and run a fresh power wire off of the battery to the new amp, and run a fresh ground to the chassis of the car.  You'll want to get 'remote' power for the aftermarket amp off of either the factory amp, or the factory harness's 'power antenna lead' if there is one, or just use the accessory, with the downside that your amp will turn on even if the stereo is off when the car is on.
