Car Stereos: 2005 Mustang GT Door Speaker Replacement, looking up at the bottom, mustang gt

Question
Hi,

I am going to replace the door speakers on my 2005 mustang, and am looking for specific instructions on removing the cover plate and speakers.  Can you help?  Thanks! :)

Answer
Hey John -

If you're installing speakers yourself because you think it's expensive, then you might want to consider that most install shops charge around 30 bucks to change out your speakers.  I'd  really consider that before doing it yourself.

But, if you're doing it for fun, then here's my answer:

I can't remember every single car by memory, but the rules are usually the same.

On the speaker grille, look for screws.  If you see screws then removing them should let the grille come off.  If you don't see screws, the grille is either held in place by brackets or is permanently attached.  If it's held on by brackets, a simple flat head screwdriver can pry them off, but be careful not to damage the door or grille in the process.  It's tough to determine if the grille is held on by brackets because if you pry a permanent one, you could really break it.

When I do doors that I'm not familiar with, I just pull the entire door panel off.  To me, that's just standard procedure.  To do that (the right way) you'll need a door panel removal tool.  They're really cheap and look like two pronged forks.  Most door panels are held on by plastic / nylon plugs that pop into the holes in the metal door.  There are usually some screws behind the door handle and/or lock release handle.  Look for any other screws and take them out.

Once you're pretty sure all the screws are out, start prying the plugs out of the door.  Open the door, lay on the ground with a flashlight looking up at the bottom of the door, and gently pry the door panel away from the metal door.  You should be able to see where a plug is holding the door in.  Stick the tool up into that area and pry like you're using a crowbar.  It should pop.  Do that all around the door, locating the plugs by sight or feel, until the door panel is flapping on the door.  Lift the door off the sill where the window is and pull the handle through the hole.  Unplug all the power switches and you should see your speaker sitting there waiting for you.

The speakers should be held in by screws.  Take the screws out, and the speaker should come out easily.  You might be able to find speaker harnesses at your local install shop.  If you can, then go for it.  If not, then you'll have to cut the wire and attach your own plugs.

If you need more help let me know.

Thanks!
